The man accused of raping and murdering an 11-year-old girl last week died yesterday morning in his prison cell.
Authorities in the State of México confirmed yesterday that Octavio Sánchez Razo, 42, committed suicide by hanging.
Sánchez was arrested last Friday in connection with the sexual assault and murder of Valeria Gutiérrez Ortiz in Nezahualcóyotl. He was believed to be the driver of a public transit vehicle that the victim boarded on Thursday.
Her body was found the following day in the vehicle, which had been abandoned.
The state Attorney-General’s office said yesterday that an autopsy of the suspect revealed genetic material that matched that of the victim.
Officials also announced that the warden and the security chief of the Neza Bordo prison in which Sánchez was being held have been dismissed and 16 guards are under investigation.
Also being investigated are Sánchez’ three cellmates, one of whom discovered his body early yesterday morning.
He had hung himself with a length of cord used by prisoners as a clothes line.
