From beaches to ruins, 10 Mexico vacations

Mexico has much more to offer than sandy beaches and sunshine

When people think “vacation in Mexico” they’re likely to think sandy beaches, blue sky and sunshine.

But there are actually nine other kinds of vacation in Mexico, according to a list compiled by the website Countries Actually.

As you might expect, No. 1 on the list is the beach vacation because nowhere in the world are the beaches better than Mexico in destinations such as Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, Mazatlán and many more.

Next up is the colonial cities vacation. After the Spanish arrived in the 16th century they built cities that featured baroque architecture and mission churches. Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende and Querétaro are just three examples out of many, and give visitors a glimpse into a majestic era.

The Copper Canyon vacation takes visitors to the state of Chihuahua and the Tarahumara region where the Copper Canyon, 300 meters deeper than the Grand Canyon in the U.S. is a must-see destination.

A train carries passengers from sea level to 2,200 meters, passing through 86 tunnels and over 39 bridges, some of which are well over a kilometer above the floor of the canyon.

The all-inclusive resort vacation allows visitors to check in, never leave the property and have a wonderful time. Accommodation, meals, personal service and lots to do are provided for just a single price.

Because Mexico has some outstanding locations for divers, such as Cozumel and Cabo San Lucas, the scuba diving vacation is fifth on the list. In Cozumel, water visibility can be up to 60 meters and there are more than 200 species of tropical fish.

Cabo, too, offers good visibility along with shipwrecks and underwater canyons to explore.

The archaeological ruins vacation is made possible by Mexico’s rich cultural heritage of Maya and Aztec civilizations, and others, the remains of which are now scattered throughout the country.

Some are well tended and easy to find on tourist maps, while others are in disrepair and hidden in the jungle. Exploring them can make for an adventurous vacation.

Fishing brings people from all over the world for a sportfishing vacation. Popular destinations include Los Cabos — for sailfish and marlin — and Mazatlán — for dorado and tuna.

As the oldest continuously inhabited city in the western hemisphere, Mexico City is a vacation in itself. The Mexico City vacation, which takes visitors to what was once the Aztec city of Tenochtitlán, has 130 museums, 64 theaters, five stadiums, 11 ecological parks and seven archaeological sites.

Mexico has its fair share of spas, and a spa vacation can be enjoyed in many hotels or in stand-alone spa destinations, offering everything from massages and seaweed wraps, to manicures and yoga.

From January through March is a good time to enjoy a whale-watching vacation when 11,000 of the world’s 21,000 gray whales migrate from the Arctic to give birth to their young.

It is an inspiring and touching spectacle that makes for another great Mexico vacation opportunity.

We’ve got that at home, why go on vacation at all? Pretty idiotic writing for a travel news site. Oy Vey.

AMEN pierre! In fact, a rather juvenile, if not silly writing at best. Definitely waaaaay below ‘par’ for MND’s regularly informative and welcome news articles.

Pierre, you’ve got it pretty good at home if someone is preparing all your drinks and meals, and cleaning up after you, while your big decision is “do I swim in one of 6 pools or the beautiful ocean?”!

Hotels offering exclusively All-Inclusive are killing local business. It’s fine if the resort is a bit of a distance from shopping areas with restaurants, but when there has been a symbiotic relationship for years between hotels and local restaurants then it is unfair competition, and I would like to see local governments impose sanctions or additional taxes on hotels that do so.

True….Cancun used to have great local restaurants across from the hotels. Now, with all-inclusives, that local flavor is vanishing and Cancun Hotel Zone resembles the Vegas Strip.
