A birthday party ended in tragedy early yesterday morning in Tizayuca, Hidalgo, after armed men killed 11 people, including two minors.
The state Attorney General said the attackers were settling scores and that the father of the child celebrating her birthday was the target.
The incident occurred in the aftermath of a children’s birthday party in a tent installed on the street in the community of Tepojaco. An undetermined number of men arrived after midnight and attacked victims with knives. No guns were used.
According to Attorney General Javier Ramiro Lara Salinas, the father had been imprisoned in a state penitentiary for kidnapping, a detail that could be related to the attack.
Also among the dead were an official with Mexico City’s Public Security Secretariat and a woman identified as having attempted to smuggle 245 grams of marijuana into the Zumpango prison in Ecatepec.
Tizayuca is located on the state border with the Estado de México and is considered by authorities as one of the municipalities with the highest crime rates, where illegal activities include theft, homicide and small-scale drug trafficking.
In the last 10 years, official records indicate that over 186,000 people have been murdered. Last May was the most violent month in the last decade, with a total of 2,186 homicides.
