Eighteen people are dead after the truck in which they were traveling rolled over on a mountain road Sunday in Zapotitlán de Méndez, Puebla.
The Nissan truck was carrying an undetermined number of passengers in its cargo area from Tepango de Rodríguez to Zapotitlán de Méndez. It is not uncommon for such trucks to offer passenger transportation service in the northern Puebla sierra, and elsewhere.
Authorities have blamed the accident on excessive speed, too much weight and a failure of the vehicle’s brakes. The truck struck a wall of earth at the roadside, causing it to roll over.
Most of the passengers were thrown out of the cargo bay as the truck rolled, while others became trapped under the vehicle. In all, 16 people were found dead at the scene by emergency personnel. Two more died later in hospital.
Among the dead are nine women, six men and three minors.
Five more passengers are still being treated in local hospitals.
