Mexico-Brazil match produces 8.6 million tweets

Twitter was busy today, transmitting 8.6 million tweets about the Mexico-Brazil match at the World Cup, more than twice the number of the previous game.

Mexican players Guillermo Ochoa, the goalkeeper who is being hailed as a hero back home in Mexico, Javier Hernández and Andrés Guardado got the most mentions on the Mexican side. Neymar, Thiago Silva and Fred got the most mentions among the Brazilians.

The most active moments were Ochoa’s saves against Neymar and Thiago Silva, which generated about 243,000 tweets a minute.

Most of the traffic came from the southern United States, Mexico, Central America, Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. Last Friday’s game against Cameroon generated more than 3.6 million tweets.

Meanwhile, winner of the Twitter follower challenge was Mexico. As of 7:00pm Central Time El Tricolor had 1.87 million Twitter followers, and Brazil 1.69 million.  Brazil issued a challenge last Friday to see which team could come to the game with the most followers.
