There has been chaos on the Cancún-Playa del Carmen highway this morning after the collapse of a 12-meter section of the roadway.
All four lanes of the highway have been affected since about 4:00am when a section of the highway dropped about 2.5 meters in an area of cenotes, or natural sinkholes, near the Hotel Iberostar.
According to a report issued four hours later, vehicles were backed up at least five kilometers, prompting authorities to issue a plea that citizens avoid travel between the two cities unless it was absolutely necessary.
The Nuevo Xcan-Playa del Carmen toll road has been suggested as an alternate route, for which tolls have been temporarily lifted.
Travelers arriving at the Cancún airport are being notified through airlines of the highway’s closure.
Workers are at the site of the collapse this morning making temporary repairs to get the highway reopened.
