A candidate for mayor in Apaseo el Alto, Guanajuato, was shot dead today while campaigning.
José Remedios Aguirre was attacked and killed by gunmen shortly before noon at the entrance to the city’s Parque Ecológico.
Another man as yet unidentified was also killed, according to one report, but other media were reporting that two people were wounded in the shooting.
A former head of security for the municipality, Remedios Aguirre was running as a Morena party candidate.
The two gunmen were traveling in a white Ford Mustang convertible.
Morena party candidates throughout the state halted their campaign activities upon hearing the news.
Ricardo Sheffield Padilla, the party’s candidate for governor, was heading a forum on security in Celaya when he was advised of Remedios Aguirre’s death. After suspending the forum, he told reporters he held Governor Miguel Márquez Márquez responsible for the crime.
The two victims are among 10 people killed or found dead in the state today.
Two municipal police officers in Tomelópez, Irapuato, were ambushed and killed at about 7:00am by hitmen and a third officer was wounded.
Two hours earlier, the headless bodies of three people were discovered in the community of San José Agua Azul in Apaseo el Grande.
Shortly after midnight, gunmen attacked a home in the Santa Bárbara neighborhood in Celaya, killing three people and wounding one.
