Soldiers and Federal Police captured — for the second time — the man believed to be second in command of the Jalisco Nueva Generación cartel, probably the most sought after drug gang in Mexico today.
Rubén “El Menchito” Oseguera González, son of cartel boss Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, was arrested early this morning without incident in the Guadalajara suburb of Zapopan.
Believed to be the gang’s finance chief, Oseguera González spent much of last year in jail after he was arrested, again in Zapopan, by Army personnel on January 30. He was carrying more than 25 million pesos and firearms at the time.
Oseguera González attempted to buy his way out of captivity by offering his captors the contents of a strongbox in the house where was taken. The box was found to contain 17.75 million pesos (or US $1.15 million) and US $610,000 in cash.
In December, he was freed by a federal judge for lack of evidence against him.
Security forces have escalated their efforts to rein in the cartel and capture its leader since it launched a series of attacks throughout Jalisco on May 1 and shot down an Army helicopter. Fifteen people died during the day of violence.
