The disappearance of a Catholic priest early yesterday in Catemaco, Veracruz, triggered acts of vandalism and the blockade of two highway accesses today in the municipality situated on the shores of Lake Catemaco.
Catemaco parish priest José Luis Sánchez Ruiz was last seen Thursday afternoon. The church had recently been involved in a discussion over injustice and spearheaded protests against high electrical rates.
A church official indicated there had been threats against the priest, reported Animal Político.
Early this morning about 300 people, parishioners and members of the Organization for Indigenous Autonomous Government, raised highway blockades, burned a police patrol vehicle and vandalized offices of the Federal Electricity Commission.
A reporter was attacked by protesters and warned not to take photographs.
