Police move against Michoacán students

Authorities in Michoacán made a rare move against normal school students yesterday, preventing them blocking freight train tracks and hijacking trucks and buses.

Riot police, 20 patrol vehicles and a helicopter were dispatched to the Morelia-Pátzcuaro highway near the Tiripetío normal school, or teacher college, where students had set up a blockade on railroad tracks and were set to do the same on the highway.

“With strict respect for human rights of the protesters police officers forced the students to withdraw from both sides of the highway,” said the Public Security Secretariat in a statement.

No arrests were made.

The students have been hijacking and burning buses, tractor-trailers and delivery trucks since June to press their demands for teaching positions upon graduation without having to take evaluation tests.

Meanwhile, in the state capital other students who want to be teachers retook by force the administration offices at the Michoacán University of San Nicolás de Hidalgo.

The move gave the dissident Movement of Rejected Students control over the entire university. Authorities had regained the administration building Tuesday after reaching an accord with a moderate wing of the students’ group.

But less moderate students, armed with sticks and stones, forced their way in early yesterday morning, breaking windows and expelling personnel who had remained inside to safeguard against such an attack.

The students are demanding to be enrolled in the education faculty despite having failed their admission tests. They have been protesting for the past 53 days.
