A popular hotel located in the jungle of Quintana Roo was the target of thieves early Wednesday morning.
Two armed men entered the Explorean Kohunlich, the top-rated hotel in Chetumal on the travel site Trip Advisor, overpowered and tied up a night watchman and did 30,000 pesos worth of damage before fleeing with at least 125,000 pesos (US $8,500).
Located 65 kilometers from the city of Chetumal on the southern Yucatán peninsula, the Fiesta Americana all-inclusive hotel is popular with both international and domestic visitors, and receives positive reviews on its page at Trip Advisor.
Two kilometers away are the ruins of the archaeological zone of Kohunlich.
A report by Noticaribe said the thieves broke into the administration offices and removed a safe which they cut into two pieces with an electric grinder. They removed 60,000 pesos from the safe and another 65,000 pesos from other locations, as well as a laptop computer.
Another report said the total taken was 300,000 pesos.
The hotel is equipped with surveillance cameras, whose recordings are being reviewed by authorities.
