Team off to Europe to design, build race car

UNAM Motorsports to compete for the first time in Formula Student

A team of young automotive enthusiasts left for Europe yesterday to become the first Mexican team to participate in annual competitions known as Formula Student.

Engineering and industrial design students from the National Autonomous University (UNAM) will travel to Italy, Austria and Germany where they will compete with other university teams to design and build a race car.

UNAM Motorsports, created in 2010, is participating in the European events with support from Formula One Mexican Grand Prix, which sees its involvement as an opportunity to promote Mexican talent around the world.

The Formula Student program, meanwhile, is intended to offer a new generation of young people the opportunity to get involved in motorsports.

It is a spinoff of Formula SAE, a competition launched in the U.S. in 1980 by what was then called the Society of Automotive Engineers. The concept is that a fictional company has contracted with a student design team to develop a small Formula-style race car.

UNAM students have participated since 2010 in Formula SAE events in the U.S., where they have won for best Latin American team and second most powerful car among other awards.
