Toyota México has announced it will build the subcompact Yaris R at the Mazda plant in Salamanca, Guanajuato, as the domestic market heats up for vehicles in that category.
Under its agreement with Mazda, Toyota will produce 50,000 units annually for the Mexican market and for export.
So far this year, subcompact sales are up 36.5% in Mexico, according to the Mexican Automotive Dealers Association (AMDA), representing sales of 224,727 vehicles. The General Motors Aveo, the Volkswagen Vento and the Nissan Tsuru led the way.
The subcompact category is the most popular, with 37% of the market.
The Yaris R will be available in three different versions and comes with a 1.5-liter, 106-hp engine, and manual or automatic six-speed transmission, the company said yesterday.
