When the Federal Police paid off an outstanding debt to hotels in Guerrero last week, the force simply added to an existing debt it has with Turissste, the travel agency that operates under the government employees’ health service, ISSSTE.
That debt, according to data obtained through a freedom of information request by Reforma, exceeded 1.14 billion pesos (US $65.5 million ) as of last September.
The travel agency had paid out the money for airfares, ground transportation, accommodation and food on behalf of the police force.
Yesterday, National Security Commissioner Renato Sales Heredia said “a good part” of the debt had already been paid off, and efforts were under way to pay off the balance. He did not say how much had been paid.
Last week, Turissste covered about 32 million pesos owing by the Federal Police to 31 hotels in Guerrero, where police had stayed after being posted to the state to deal with increased violence. The debt dated back nearly two years.
