One of the biases and prejudices that still persist regarding the practice of Midwifery has its origins in the intention to impose the discursive regime of medical scientism, which sought to establish biomedical discourse as an absolute truth. In Europe, obstetricians launched their attack against Midwives in the name of science and reforms. Midwives were ridiculed as “incurably dirty, ignorant, and incompetent” individuals. They were particularly blamed for the widespread dissemination of puerperal septicemias (postpartum uterine infections) and neonatal ophthalmias (blindness caused by gonorrhea) (Ehrenreich, 2006, p.61). Arguments that are still used to discredit and condemn Midwifery from the
