Christmas Tree Lighting | Holiday Kickoff in San Miguel de Allende
San Miguel de Allende welcomes the holiday season with its beloved Christmas Tree Lighting in the Jardín Principal, right in front of the iconic parish church. On the evening of December 6 at 7 p.m., Mayor Mauricio Trejo leads the countdown as the “arbolito” bursts into light, filling the historic center with a sense of hope, peace, and shared joy for local families and visitors alike.
The celebration turns the city’s main square into a festive village, complete with carols, traditional treats like atole and tamales, goodie bags for children, fireworks, and even a small train rolling over the cobblestones. Established as a special first-Friday-of-December tradition, the event is coordinated by the municipal tourism office to showcase San Miguel’s December magic—a night of community, color, and Christmas spirit that many residents carry as one of their favorite memories of the year.
