Workers’ Day is one of the most important dates on the world calendar, as it is one of the days celebrated worldwide on the same day: May 1. It is commemorated with the current objective of promoting human rights in the world of work and reflecting on the value of human capital. This day was instituted by the Socialist Workers Congress of the Second International in 1889, in Paris, in commemoration of the “Martyrs of Chicago”. Who were they? In 1886, thousands of workers in Chicago, United States, were tired of being exploited by the companies, so they decided to raise their voices and began to defend and demand their labor rights. What did they do? They decided to take to the streets and demand: an 8-hour workday, the main demand, since they work very long shifts without rest. Other demands were: the right to strike, freedom of expression and association, to have work and a fair salary, the disappearance of child labor, dignified and safe working conditions and rest on Sundays. They were arduous days of struggle, and although they were victorious, many died in the attempt, but achieving great changes for the future. Mexico and Labor Day In Mexico, the history of this day begins in 1913, when 25 thousand workers made for the first time the May 1st parade, demanding the implementation of the eight-hour work day, to the president in office: Victoriano Huerta. This type of protest continued for years, with an increase in the number of people demonstrating. However, it was only in 1923 that May 1st was promulgated as Labor Day in Mexico by Álvaro Obregón. But, Mexicans had to wait until 1925 for the president to establish the celebration officially with the promulgation of the Political Constitution, where the rights of workers were recognized and protected by law. In addition, the Federal Labor Law was passed to regulate labor relations between workers and employers.
