The Scope of William Jennings Bryan by David Haddad   Come to hear the last speech of William Jennings Bryan!        The Great Commoner! This play re-creates the speech given by William Jennings Bryan 100 years ago, July 25, 1925, in Winchester, TN, four days after the end of the Scopes “Monkey” trial in Dayton, TN. William Jennings Bryan traveled to Winchester to thank his supporters. A crowd of 8000 people gathered to hear him speak. The speech was an opportunity for Bryan to fully explain his position on teaching evolution in public schools—something he was denied in the courtroom. William Jennings Bryan was the Democratic Presidential nominee in 1896, 1900, and 1908.  In this play, Bryan offers his analysis of the problems facing the USA more than 100 years ago.  Problems that could have come directly from today’s headlines:  a country dominated by Imperialism, Wall Street, oligarchs, plutocrats, fake news, attacks on democracy, and the evil of the “gunpowder gospel”.  His predictions for the future are eerily accurate.   Come hear his warnings—it may be our last chance! Frank Simons gives “a rousing rendition of that speech”.    Georgetown professor Michael Kazin, author of A Godly Hero: The Life of William Jennings Bryan.
