Instituto Allende LLP: Ethics with Austen — Moral Philosophy Through Pride and Prejudice
The Instituto Allende’s Lifelong Learning Program presents Ethics with Austen, a two-session philosophy course taught by PhD candidate Rebecca Robb on March 19 and 20 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the LLP classroom at Ancha de San Antonio 22, San Miguel de Allende. Priced at 325 pesos, the course uses Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice as a lens for exploring five major ethical frameworks — Utilitarianism, Ethics of Care, Relational Ethics, Contract Ethics and Deontological Ethics — examining timeless tensions such as individual happiness versus family obligation, and freedom versus security.
No prior knowledge of philosophy is needed; participants are simply encouraged to read or rewatch Pride and Prejudice beforehand, with a free open-copyright edition available online. Robb’s interdisciplinary approach — drawing on literature, history and theology alongside philosophy — and her discussion-oriented format make this an exceptionally inviting course for expats and visitors in San Miguel who want to think seriously about ethics in a relaxed, intellectually stimulating setting.
