Instituto Allende LLP: Logic with Sherlock — Philosophy Through the Holmes Stories

The Instituto Allende’s Lifelong Learning Program presents Logic with Sherlock, an accessible two-session introduction to philosophy taught by PhD candidate Rebecca Robb on March 16 and 17 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the LLP classroom at Ancha de San Antonio 22, San Miguel de Allende. Priced at 325 pesos, the course uses Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories as an entry point into formal logic and epistemology — the branch of philosophy concerned with how we know what we know — exploring the difference between knowledge and belief, and examining how women have historically been underestimated as logical thinkers.

Rather than a traditional lecture, the course is designed as an open, discussion-oriented dialogue that draws on participants’ own life experiences, guided by Robb’s background in Ethics and Public Affairs from Carleton University and her commitment to making philosophy genuinely engaging for everyday learners. For expats and curious visitors in San Miguel who enjoy a sharp mental workout in good company, this is a rare opportunity to explore one of philosophy’s most practical disciplines through one of literature’s most beloved characters.
