The concept of Hispanic identity highlights how governments and societies define people through broad cultural, racial and linguistic categories. In Mexico, the promotion of a shared mestizo identity helped build national unity but contributed to the marginalisation of Indigenous languages and identities. In the U.S., the Hispanic label groups people from diverse backgrounds together, often overlooking how they identify themselves. Identity labels shape social hierarchies, influence people’s experiences and reflect the power of those who classify others.
