Editor’s note: The September MND Peso Index™ suggests that the peso is increasingly expensive relative to the U.S. dollar in everyday purchasing-power terms. Using a standardized basket of 20 goods and services priced in Mexico and Dallas, the index calculated an implied exchange rate of 17.96 pesos per dollar on Sept. 2, compared with the official Banxico FIX rate of 16.98—meaning the peso was overvalued by 5.8%, its highest assessment since the index began. The gap widened as the peso appreciated and price differences shifted across both countries, reminding readers that a strong currency can feel different at the checkout counter than it does on an exchange-rate screen.
