Editor’s note: Behind Mexico’s falling birth rates are deeply personal stories—not a single explanation. In this edition, we hear from people weighing parenthood against financial pressures, safety concerns and uncertainty about the future, alongside others who simply do not want children. Drawing on a small, nonrepresentative survey, our reporting explores these perspectives without suggesting they speak for everyone. We also examine the experiences of women living with endometriosis, whose hopes of becoming mothers can be complicated by diagnostic delays and barriers to specialized care. Together, these stories underscore the importance of choice: respecting those who do not want children while supporting those who do, with the health care, security and resources to pursue their own paths.
