⚡ Grammar Focus: Hay vs. está

Think of yourself as a festival guide. You need two different tools:
Your goal
Use
Example
Say what exists or is present
Hay
Hay una fiesta. — There is a celebration.
Say where one specific thing is located
Está
La fiesta está en Chacahua Isla. — The celebration is in Chacahua Isla.
Locate multiple people or things
Están
Las máscaras están aquí. — The masks are here.
Hay stays the same with singular and plural nouns:
  • Hay una máscara. — There is one mask.
  • Hay muchas máscaras. — There are many masks.
Your memory shortcut: Hay introduces something; está puts it on the map.
Mini mission: Look around your room. Say one sentence with hay and another with está. You have just turned your surroundings into Spanish practice.
