Grammar Focus

1. Hay + noun

   • Use “hay” to say “there is / there are”:

     • Hay mucha gente. – There are many people.

     • Hay banderas y coches. – There are flags and cars.

2. Present tense of “estar” for feelings and locations

   • La gente está feliz. – People are happy.

   • La gente está en el centro. – People are in the downtown area.

3. Very simple past with context words

   • México gana el partido (context: “hoy” or “esta noche”).

   • At A1 you can often use the present with a time word instead of a past tense.

Una noche de fiesta en la ciudad

México gana un partido importante en el Estadio Azteca y la ciudad está de fiesta. Por la noche, las calles del centro están llenas de gente feliz.
Hay música, banderas de México y muchos coches con personas que cantan y gritan de alegría. Alrededor del Ángel de la Independencia, los amigos se reúnen, bailan y toman fotos.
Algunas personas caminan hasta el Zócalo para seguir la celebración. Es una noche muy especial para la ciudad y para los aficionados al fútbol.
