⚡ Grammar Focus

Use hay when introducing something for the first time or saying that it exists:
  • Hay una colección importante en México. — There is an important collection in Mexico.
  • Hay tres pinturas en la sala. — There are three paintings in the room.
Use está or están when saying where a specific thing is:
  • La pintura está en la pared. — The painting is on the wall.
  • Las fotografías están en el museo. — The photographs are in the museum.
Quick win: Think of hay as “something exists,” and está/están as “something is located.” Master this pair, and you unlock countless everyday descriptions in Spanish.

📖 Una colección para todos

En México hay una colección de arte muy importante. La colección tiene pinturas, dibujos y fotografías. Algunas obras son de artistas mexicanos y otras son de artistas extranjeros. Muchas personas visitan el museo para ver el arte. En el museo, una pintura está en la pared y una escultura está en una sala grande. La directora dice: “El arte es parte de nuestra historia”. Un coleccionista tiene muchas obras, pero también quiere compartirlas con el público. El gobierno y los museos trabajan para proteger el patrimonio cultural. Para algunas personas, una colección privada es buena. Para otras, las obras deben estar en un museo público. Todos quieren cuidar el arte y aprender más sobre México, su cultura y sus artistas.
