⚡ Grammar Focus:

This is one of Spanish’s most useful mini-superpowers.
  • Use hay to say that something exists or is present:
Hay más personas mayores. — “There are more older people.”
  • Use tener when a person, place or thing has something:
México tiene 130.9 millones de habitantes. — “Mexico has 130.9 million inhabitants.”
  • Use ser for measurements, identities and descriptions:
La tasa es baja. — “The rate is low.”
Quick memory hook: If you can point to something and say “there is/are,” choose hay. If Mexico “owns” a number or feature, choose tiene. One tiny choice makes your Spanish sound instantly more natural.
