⚡ Grammar focus: Preterite vs. imperfect

Here is a storytelling superpower. Spanish gives you two main past tenses that work like a camera:
  • Preterite is the snapshot: completed actions that move the story forward.
  • Imperfect is the backdrop: ongoing actions, descriptions, repeated habits, or context.
Function
Spanish
English
Completed event
Sheinbaum mencionó a Antonia Nava.
Sheinbaum mentioned Antonia Nava.
Completed event
La presidenta tocó la campana.
The president rang the bell.
Background setting
La multitud estaba reunida en el Zócalo.
The crowd was gathered in the Zócalo.
Ongoing condition
Las comunidades recibían poca visibilidad.
The communities received / had been receiving little visibility.
Your storytelling streak: Use the imperfect to set the scene, then drop in the preterite to make the action happen:
While the crowd was waiting, the president came out onto the balcony.
That contrast makes your Spanish sound vivid, natural, and ready for journalism, travel writing, or conversation.
