Editor’s note: Mexico and the United States are stepping up border-security coordination through Operation High Eagle, a binational effort focused on stopping criminal drones near Tijuana and San Diego. Acting on U.S.-shared intelligence, Mexico’s Army disabled a drone allegedly used to monitor human-trafficking routes and arrested its operator, who reportedly had a handgun, ammunition and the aircraft’s control system. The operation has disabled four drones so far and involves roughly 800 personnel operating on their respective sides of a five-kilometer border zone. Its use of information-sharing and anti-drone technology reflects closer cooperation while preserving each country’s authority within its own territory.

The Defense Ministry said the drone belonged to a criminal group and was used to monitor human trafficking routes.
The stage of the operation currently underway involves the deployment of forces in the border region of each country, supported by fixed and mobile anti-drone equipment.
