Editor’s note: Mexico is moving toward tighter rules on children’s use of screens, social media and AI. Starting at the end of October, cell phones and tablets will be prohibited in primary and secondary schools nationwide, while high schools will set their own limits for safe, educational use. The federal government is also gathering public input before proposing broader safeguards for minors on social media and AI platforms. The debate comes as Mexico’s latest PISA results placed the country 64th of 91 participating systems, with reading and math scores at their lowest point since 2009. Education officials have linked excessive screen use to weaker reading habits, attention and social interaction, while proposing more offline, collaborative activities in schools.
