Editor’s note: In Mexico City, how strongly an earthquake is felt can vary dramatically by neighborhood because of the ground beneath it. Areas built on the former lakebed—such as Centro, Cuauhtémoc, Roma, Condesa and Juárez—have softer, water-rich clay soils that can amplify seismic waves and have historically seen greater damage. By contrast, much of the southern city rests on more stable volcanic terrain left by the Xitle eruption. Neighborhoods including Jardines del Pedregal, Ciudad Universitaria, Guadalupe Inn and San Ángel generally experience less intense shaking, although no part of Mexico City is entirely free of earthquake risk.
