“Oaxaca’s state government has announced plans to file a legal complaint against Adidas and Mexican-American designer Willy Chavarría, citing the alleged unauthorized use of the name “Oaxaca” and of traditional huarache designs in the company’s newly launched Oaxaca Slip-On sandal.”

The threatened complaint is the latest in a string of accusations of cultural appropriation stemming from the use without permission of Indigenous Mexican designs by commercial companies.

The fashion designer says he meant to honor his Mexican roots, but Adidas apparently made no effort to work in cooperation with the original Indigenous artisans.
