Advanced Level: From Observation to Interpretation

Overview: You will explore how artistic choices shape meaning and how attention changes someone’s relationship with a familiar landscape. Your grammar focus is the subjunctive in two constructions: basta que and no se trata de que… sino de que…. At this level, the challenge is not simply using longer words. It is controlling emphasis, qualification, and perspective.

⚡ Grammar Focus:

1. Basta que + subjunctive

This construction identifies a sufficient condition:
All it takes is for her to pause for the scene to reveal its details.
  • Se detenga is present subjunctive of detenerse.
  • Revele is present subjunctive of revelar, introduced here by para que.
The sentence does more than describe an action: it emphasizes how little is needed to make discovery possible.

2. No se trata de que… sino de que…

Use this structure to reject one explanation and replace it with another:
It is not that the landscape has begun to offer wonders, but that she has learned to perceive them.
Notice the contrast:
  • Haya comenzado: present perfect subjunctive. The first explanation is rejected rather than asserted.
  • Ha aprendido: present perfect indicative. The second explanation is presented as the interpretation being affirmed.
The mood in the second clause depends on how the speaker frames it; the indicative here asserts the proposed explanation.
Mini-mission: use No se trata de que… sino de que… to contrast “the world changed” with “my attention changed.” You are no longer just reporting events—you are shaping an argument.
