If you could handle the basic level... this will be a piece of cake!

Intermediate Level: Tell the Story Behind the Sketch

Overview: You will expand your vocabulary for art and observation, then use the imperfect and preterite together. Think of the imperfect as the scene already unfolding; the preterite introduces a completed event within that scene.

💬 Phrases

Spanish
English
Volvió a abrir un cuaderno.
She opened a sketchbook again.
Curiosity became an artistic practice.
Mientras dibujaba, observaba los insectos.
While she was drawing, she observed the insects.

⚡ Grammar focus: Set the scene, then reveal the discovery

The imperfect describes past habits, ongoing actions, or background circumstances:
  • Caminaba entre las plantas. — She was walking among the plants.
  • Utilizaba acuarelas. — She used watercolors.
  • Llevaba décadas sin practicar. — She had gone decades without practicing.
The preterite presents an event as completed:
  • Encontró una vaina. — She found a seedpod.
  • Volvió a dibujar. — She started drawing again.
  • Vio una mariposa. — She saw a butterfly.
Put them together:
Mientras dibujaba una pasiflora, vio una mariposa.
While she was drawing a passionflower, she saw a butterfly.
Dibujaba gives the ongoing background. Vio introduces the completed act of noticing.
Story-building pattern:
Mientras + imperfect, followed by a preterite event.
Mini-mission: finish Mientras caminaba… with a discovery. One sentence can now hold both a scene and a turning point.
