Basic level: Life in the Zócalo Today

Grammar Focus 

• Use hay = “there is/there are”:

  • Hay maestros en el Zócalo. – There are teachers in the Zócalo.

• Use estar for temporary locations and situations:

  • Los maestros están en la calle. – The teachers are in the street.

  • La policía está en la entrada. – The police are at the entrance.

Un día en el Zócalo

En la Ciudad de México, el Zócalo está muy ocupado hoy. Hay maestros de Oaxaca y de otros estados. Ellos protestan y caminan por las calles. Quieren entrar al Zócalo para hacer un campamento, pero la policía bloquea la entrada. También hay trabajadores preparando un festival de la Copa Mundial. Instalan pantallas grandes y estructuras metálicas en la plaza. Por eso, las autoridades dicen que es peligroso tener muchas personas allí. Los maestros están en huelga y buscan otro lugar para seguir su protesta en la ciudad.
