⚡ Grammar Focus

In Spanish, hay means “there is” or “there are.” It is a very practical word: it does not change whether you are talking about one thing or many.
Hay un mural. — There is a mural.
Hay muchos murales. — There are many murals.
Hay estudiantes en el campus. — There are students on campus.
Do not say “son muchos estudiantes en el campus” to express that students exist there. Use hay instead: it is your shortcut for describing any city, museum, university, or trip. One word, endless possibilities!

📖 Una universidad muy especial

La UNAM es una universidad pública muy importante de México. Está en la Ciudad de México y tiene muchos estudiantes. La universidad es antigua, pero su campus moderno es famoso. El campus está sobre roca volcánica negra. Hay edificios, jardines, murales y una biblioteca grande. La Biblioteca Central tiene dibujos hechos con piedras de colores. También hay un estadio olímpico. Muchas personas estudian medicina, ingeniería, arte, ciencias y literatura en la UNAM. Los estudiantes no pagan mucho dinero por sus estudios. Para muchas familias, la universidad representa una oportunidad. La UNAM también ayuda al país con ciencia, salud y educación. Su lema es “Por mi raza hablará el espíritu”. Es una universidad, pero también es un símbolo de México.
