Massive new Isla Mujeres resort expected to create 3,000 jobs

A large resort from hotelier Excellence Collection Group has opened in Playa Mujeres, Quintana Roo, where it is expected to create 3,000 jobs.

“Today is the time to humanize tourism, to recognize that its true strength lies in its people,” Governor of Quintana Roo Mara Lezama Espinosa said at the inauguration of the adults-only hotel Excellence Coral Playa Mujeres.

Attendees at the ceremony included Quintana Roo tourism officials, as well as Excellence Collection Group CEO Antonio Montaner and investors Bernat Pascal, Pedro Montaner and Martín Santandreu, among others.

With an investment of US $220 million, the all-inclusive resort features 470 rooms, seven pools and a spa. Located on Isla Mujeres off the coast of Cancún, it is Excellence Collection’s sixth property in the Mexican Caribbean.

The group also operates five-star hotels in the Dominican Republic and Jamaica under three brands that encompass the concept of all-inclusive luxury: Excellence Resorts are adults-only hotels located in Cancún, Riviera Maya, Punta Cana and Montego Bay; the Beloved Hotels brand which offers adults-only resorts in Cancún; and Finest Resorts, which cater to guests of all ages in Cancún and Punta Cana.

“We couldn’t be more excited to expand our adults-only all-inclusive offering with the proud debut of Excellence Coral Playa Mujeres in February,” Deputy CEO Domingo Aznar said in a statement.

“Our team strives to create unforgettable, elevated experiences, and this new property will provide the highest level of service and sophistication to travelers seeking romance and relaxation,” he added.

Lezama said the hotel group plans further investments in Quintana Roo, including a new development in Puerto Morelos, between Cancún and Playa del Carmen in the Riviera Maya, amounting to US $200 million.

According to Marissa Setién, head of the Costa Mujeres Hotel Association, Isla Mujeres will have 11,000 hotel rooms in the next two years and 25,000 rooms by 2030. There are currently 9,000 hotel rooms on the island.

  1. In 1972 my wife and I spent part of our honeymoon on isla mujeres. Only a couple small restaurants and street carts existed. Few hotels w minimal offerings.
And now it is a a different story.
    Progress?
I remember diving with a local guy from his panga boat named el zorro Feliz.
    Amazing

    • You are right I stayed there for a couple of months about 10 years ago. A wonderful place. Not any more. Trashed forever….progress NO….I’d call it destruction.

    • “How awful that will be”. Simple solution, don’t go. But leave the decision as to what’s done with one’s land to the land owners and their customers. Please. Gringos imposing their standards on poorer countries is an absolute disaster.

  2. You only have to look at the pictures to realise this is another example of catastrophic overdevelopment which destroys the natural environment.
The Mexican government at state level needs to rethink its development strategy if this is the best they can offer in terms of sustainable development. I certainly will not be vacationing on Isla Mujeres or in Tulum in the future. Thank God I saw the Riviera Maya when it was still unspoilt

  3. I came to Isla Mujeres several times between 1965 and 1971. Got my rooms for 5 bucks a night. the 7 mile beach was wonderful, buried my kid in the white sand. Rent a bike for $2 bucks. I’d buy 10 small Superior beers for $1. Great place then. What does it cost for a day in an all inclusive fare schedule?Oh, probably $10 per day, NOT

  4. Lead photo caption announces: “The 470-room hotel is located on Isla Mujeres, off the coast of Cancún.”
    This is totally incorrect reporting.
Nezt sentence reads: “A large resort from hotelier Excellence Collection Group has opened in Playa Mujeres, Quintana Roo, ” This is correct.

As you can see from the posts, you are causing lots of confusion, since the resort you’re resporting on is located on the mainland portion of the municipality of Isla Mujeres, not on the island itself. This mainland part of the municipalilty is now being called Playa Mujeres, (on the charts it is Isla Blanca), where all these new mega resorts are being built. To get to Playa Mujeres, where this hotel just opened, you drive north from Cancun along the coast. Rita, Cozumel

  5. They will need to increase the number of boats otherwise visitors won’t be able to get to the island for all the workers going over for a shift.

  6. When I read the comments here it reinforces for me all of the reasons capitalism is a goner in the USA and much of the western world. Whether you like it or not (which btw don’t like it, don’t visit it, don’t go anywhere near it, that’s certainly your choice) in capitalism people/companies/owners get to do what they wish with their land. If they want to build a resort, so be it. Whether knowingly or not the white westerner keeps hamstringing themselves. And you know what? The Mexicans benefit via jobs, factories, and vacationers going south. Good for them.

My wife and I are taking our business to Mexico because persnickety Karen westerners don’t see anything or anyone they don’t want to control.

When I was younger and dumber I thought Mexico was a socialist country. As it turns out they are far from. Their welfare state is absolutely DWARFED by the welfare state in the US. And Capitalism is alive and well all over the country. Thank God. Yes they have some major problems, most caused by the drug appetites of westerners, but it’s a pleasure for my wife and I to live and work in Mexico. To see the live and let live attitude all over the country. Btw a notion that was once popular in my own country but no longer is. My wife and I have chosen an area with very very few gringos. On purpose and for a reason. That reason being liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I don’t think those ideals are coming back to the US anytime soon.

    Cheers!

  7. This new resort is not even on the island of Isla Mujeres! I think alot of readers are confused and do not know about the area north of Cancun with some of the areas newer hotels on the pennisula of Playa Mujeres that pertains to the municipality of Isla Mujeres.
