The ultimate guide to contemporary Mexican restaurants in Guadalajara

Mexican Independence Day celebrations this month offer a great opportunity to celebrate and rediscover Mexican food, and what better way to do it than through five restaurants that are putting a contemporary spin on traditional Mexican cuisine?

From chilaquiles with poblano chile sauce to eggplant tamales and corn pancakes, here are some of the best contemporary Mexican restaurants in Guadalajara to try right now.

Ixtle

Located in Zapopan, Ixtle defines itself as a kitchen true to its roots: A relaxed concept that takes corn and Mexican ingredients as its starting point, reinterpreting them through international techniques and references.

In the mornings, guests can enjoy innovative dishes such as the Jarocho Breakfast, featuring eggs in hoja santa with longaniza, banana and confit mushrooms, or waffles made from maize accompanied by a blend of caramelized miso, maple syrup, honey, mascarpone and macadamia butter.

Lovers of traditional hot café de olla will appreciate Ixtle’s reinterpretation of a staple of Mexican cuisine — the café de olla latte, served cold with orange peel and a touch of foamy milk.

At night, the menu becomes more elaborate, drawing on a wider range of international influences and featuring dishes that are designed to be shared. The Mediterranean tuna tiradito, served with red peppers in pil-pil sauce and nixtamalized tomato paste, is a must-try.

Teté Cocina de Barrio

Teté Cocina de Barrio Michelin Guide announcement
Michelin Guide recognition only confirmed what tapatíos already knew: the food at Teté Cocina de Barrio is amazing. (Teté Cocina de Barrio/Instagram)

Spearheaded by siblings Mario and Karla Papa, Teté has been delighting tapatíos for over a decade through a cuisine that blends Mexico’s culinary heritage with flavors introduced by the different cultures that have settled in the country.

With an approach that prioritizes seasonal ingredients, the menu at Teté not only changes every month, but it is a complete surprise for diners, who do not know what they will have for dinner until dishes start arriving.

Guests are also in for another surprise: Teté does not have waiters. Instead, everyone does a bit of everything, with the chefs themselves guiding diners throughout the meal.

With no waiters and no menu, Teté defines itself as a restaurant that “doesn’t repeat menus, but experiences.” It’s no wonder this unpretentious restaurant in the Moderna neighborhood has made it to coveted culinary rankings around the world.

Amorcito Mío

Located in the heart of Zapopan Centro and just steps away from the Zapopan Basílica, Amorcito Mío offers a warm atmosphere and home-cooked-style recipes.

Although the breakfast menu offers international dishes such as sandwiches and paninis, it is simultaneously a celebration of Mexican food, albeit with a twist.

Guests will be surprised by the variety of sauces featured on the chilaquiles menu beyond the traditional red and green. Expect chilaquiles with poblano chile sauce, spicy peanut sauce and a super spicy sauce made from güero chiles and habanero.

To balance the heat, Amorcito Mío offers a varied selection of Mexican breads, including pan dulce staples like conchas, as well as traditional bolillo and birote.

While breakfasts highlight authentic Mexican flavors, the menu shifts in the afternoon and evening to feature wood-fired pizzas and a blend of Italian and Mediterranean dishes.

  • Best for: Casual gatherings with friends
  • Location: Calle 5 de Mayo 275, Zapopan, 45100 Zapopan, Jalisco

With a terrace surrounded by lush gardens and sculptures, Bruna generates excitement from the very first moment, offering diners an almost theatrical experience.

Since opening in 2015, chef Óscar Garza has drawn inspiration from Mexican abuelitas’ recipes and street-food flavors, reinterpreting them with contemporary techniques and an artistic presentation.

4 Guadalajara restaurants no foodie should miss

Among the dishes that stand out for their meticulous presentation is the chile en nogada, which returns to the menu each year during the patriotic month. Las probaditas de mole, literally meaning “little tastes of mole,” features a rainbow of colors and flavors that pushes the boundaries of classic mole poblano.

If you are looking for something sweet and original, be sure to try the bruleated corn cream, a dessert that blends the traditional flavor of corn with the classic French twist of crème brûlée.

  • Best for: Special occasions
  • Location: Lerdo de Tejada No. 2418, Col. Lafayette, Guadalajara, Jalisco

Spearheaded by chef Carlos Espinosa, Tikuun has been open for over a decade, but only recently began receiving the recognition it deserves.

Situated in the trendy Colonia Americana, it features a constantly rotating menu that showcases new preparations and seasonal variations throughout the year. Although the menu draws inspiration from different cultures and cuisines, the restaurant’s manifesto promises a distinctly Mexican essence in each dish.

Standout recent offerings include roasted eggplant with cured nopal, aged cotija, salsa macha made with chia and Kalamata olives, requesón cheese and garlic confit, as well as octopus with recado negro, chinchayote, sweet potato and beet.

The intimate, almost home-like atmosphere allows guests to savor the experience at a leisurely pace, whether ordering a la carte or opting for the tasting menu.

  • Best for: An intimate dinner with friends
  • Location: Emeterio Robles Gil 50, Col. Americana, 44600 Guadalajara, Jalisco
