Fishing tournaments are a summer staple around the Baja California peninsula, from state-sponsored competitions in destinations like Ensenada and San Felipe to big-money events in Los Cabos.

When a presidential decree opened the UNESCO-designated Loreto Bay National Park to large-scale maritime traffic, residents of the coastal Baja California Sur town were prepared to fight. 

Heartbreak: now tourists will have to enjoy the rest of the city, instead.
